Questions and Answers

Why Phi Phi?
Phi Phi Island is an ideal place with crystal
clear water and white sandy beaches plus outstanding and
convenient facilities with the classrooms only 30 meters
away from the beach. The island has a very relaxed atmosphere
about it which makes it a great learning environment and
really drives home the feeling that your dream of working
in a tropical paradise has finally come true.
What's so special about your IDC program?
One of the most important aspects of our
course is the emphasis on real world training. We believe
that almost any Course Director can give you enough knowledge
to pass the IE if that is your only goal. However, your
goal should be to understand the PADI system to the point
where you can be a successful employee or owner diving professional.
What is the average passing rate for
the IE?
World-wide the average is 89%. Here at
Moskito diving to date we have a 100%
pass rate.
Must I do the exams in English?
No, PADI has written exams in all of the
major languages. They are also getting better about Asian
languages as well, and we do have the exams in Thai. Also,
it is possible to do your oral teaching presentations in
your native tongue if you so desire.
Do we do the IE on Phi Phi?
PADI have at least two IE a year on Phi
Phi, but once you have completed your IDC you can attend
any IE if you can't do the one on the island.
When can I begin teaching
As soon as the paperwork from your IE has
been processed by PADI. Depending on where your permanent
address is, this could take between two and eight weeks.
Is it possible to 'fail' the IDC program?
No, it's is impossible to fail the IDC
- unless you just don't show up - as the IDC is a course,
not an exam. Our IDC stresses development. As a result,
you can relax while learning, knowing that mistakes are
part of the process. Although there are performance requirements
for successfully completing the course, there are no time
limitations, so you may continue to progress under your
course director's guidance. The goal is to create a low
stress environment in which you can learn to function as
a PADI Instructor. This makes the IDC challenging, yet an
enjoyable learning experience. The final evaluation of your
knowledge and skills come later during the PADI Instructor
Examinations.
Can I get a job in Thailand?
Yes, it is possible to work in this country
at one of the many resorts, including here on Phi Phi Island,
Phuket, Koh Samui and Koh Tao. We will do our best to help
you find a job here if you so choose, and we have been able
to place most of our candidates.

The Team
During your IDC Moskito Diving has a full
team of professional Instructors to help you with all aspects
of the course, these Instructors work full time in the diving
industry, diving and teaching every day of the year. Sadly
PADI will not let them do the IE for you but we are confident
that after our IDC you will be more than just prepared for
the IE you are a true professional Instructor.

Bent Posejpal
Course Director |
ABOUT BENT POSEJPAL, OUR COURSE DIRECTOR
Bent Posejpal, Our PADI Course Director,
is a Norwegian National and has been living in Thailand
since 1990.
Bent practically grew up diving, as his
father owns a dive center in Norway and Bent has been working
in the shop for as long as he can remember. His father was
the first PADI Instructor in Norway, way back when. Bent
has dived extensively in Norway both as a Navy diver and
as a PADI Pro, as well as here in Thailand.
Bent became a PADI Instructor in 1988 and
staffed many IDCs prior to becoming certified as a Course
Director in 1994. Since then, he has conducted more than
75 IDC programs in Southeast Asia and around the world and
has an extremely high referral rate among his former students.
Bent's talents also run to writing, and
he has been published several times in Norwegian diving
magazines, writing about upper-level education and about
the wonderful diving to be found in Thailand's waters.
Bent speaks English like a native, as well
as the Scandinavian Languages. If you want to get off on
the right fin in your new career in diving, get Bent as
soon as possible & meet Bent's twin brother on our next
IDC. Bent Posejpal is one of the most experienced Course
Directors in this part of the world and he will do his best
to make sure that your learning experience is positive,
fun, and rewarding. Our full-time in-house Course Director
and Staff Instructors have an unsurpassed working knowledge
of all levels of PADI courses, as they are teaching these
very courses every day. This gives them valuable insight
into the practical everyday situations all PADI professionals
face. This experience, along with their language abilities,
makes for one of the best instructional teams around. We
teach in English, but we have support for the Scandinavian
languages, German, French, Korean, and Japanese.

Instructor
Exam (IE):
After completing all aspects of the IDC
or the OWSI program, you are qualified to participate in
the PADI Instructor Examination. This two-day program, directly
following the IDC, will evaluate you in the areas as outlined
below.
If successful in the IE, you will become
certified as an Open Water Scuba Instructor.
The PADI Instructor Examination (IE) is
conducted by staff members of PADI International, and not
by your course director. This ensures impartiality and fairness
during the testing process. Following your IDC, your immediate
goal will be to pass the IE. During the last phase of your
OWSI course, Bent will counsel you individually and give
you his recommendation on whether or not you are ready to
attend the IE. It is rare when he recommends a candidate
does not attend an IE, but the counseling session is designed
to help you make an informed and honest decision about your
preparedness.
The Examiner's job is to pass the candidate,
not to fail the future instructor. The Examiner will do
everything possible to make sure that you get through the
program successfully. Their function is similar to that
of a video camera; they record what you do and give you
a black and white score of your performance. Their job is
not to teach the candidate anything as Bent has already
taught you much more than what it takes to pass the exam.
The exam is really just a formality. The Examiner's job
is to double check that all of the information has been
understood and that the candidates are ready to begin teaching
on their own.
The IE consists of four parts. To get certified
as a PADI Instructor, candidates must be successful in all
four areas. If a candidate is unsuccessful in one or two
areas, then that candidate must attend another IE and complete
only that area in which he was unsuccessful. For example,
if a candidate was only unsuccessful in the Open Water portion
of the exam, then he or she would only redo and pay for
that part at a later IE. This saves you both time and money.
The following is an overview of the required passing scores
for the IE:
PART 1 - Diving Theory:
closed-book examinations with passing scores
of 75% or higher on the following subjects:
- Physics
- Physiology
- Equipment
- General Skills and Environment
- Recreational Dive Planner
- Retest... only one allowed; two or more subjects failed
or a failure on the retest results in non certification
back to top
PADI System, Standards and Procedures:
Open book exam; passing score 75% or higher,
as it is open book exam no retest allowed.
PART 2 - Confined Water:
- Teach one skill from the Open Water Course to fellow
candidates acting as students. Passing score: 3.5 or higher
on a scale from 1.0 - 5.0. One make up allowed if unsuccessful
on the first attempt.
- Skill Evaluation Circuit: Candidates perform a circuit
consisting of five skills from the PADI Open Water Course.
Passing score is 17 total points and no skill below 3.0.
A make up allowed if only one skill was below 3.0.
PART 3 - Knowledge Development Presentation:
Candidates evaluated on a sample teaching
presentation. Specific assignments are made before the program.
Passing score is 3.5 or higher (on a scale of 1.0 - 5.0).
One retest allowed. Presentation should take between 5 -
10 minutes.
PART 4 - Open Water:
- Teach two skills from the Open Water Course to fellow
candidates acting as students. Passing score - an average
of 3.5 or higher on a scale from 1.0 - 5.0. Both scores
are added together and then divided by two. No retest.
- Open Water Rescue Examination: Response, recovery, resuscitation,
transport and equipment removal of a diver simulating
unconsciousness on the surface in deep water.
- General Diving Skills Evaluation: An evaluation of general
diving skills made by the staff during all confined and
open water sessions.

Areas of assessment include:
- Attitude: Consistent with professionalism and the educational
goals of PADI
- Professionalism
- Dress
- Conduct
- Interaction with staff and candidates
Emergency First Response
Instructor
Because
several PADI courses require students to have CPR and First
Aid training, becoming a Emergency First Response Instructor
allows you to offer all inclusive programs. Students will
not have to look elsewhere for the training they need. Also,
since Emergency First Response is not diving specific, you
can offer this training to all your customers, friends and
family. The Emergency First Response Instructor Course is
a two day program conducted right after the IE. We emphasize
a positive class environment, where we show you how to help
your students have a good time, ensuring easy learning.
As a Emergency First Response Instructor you will be much
more employable than the average instructor.

Similar to the partnership between AI's
and Instructors, IDC Staff Instructors work with Course
Directors as important team members in the Instructor Training
process. As a Staff Instructor you may staff instructor
development programs and instructor level continuing education
programs. You can also teach the PADI Assistant Instructor
Course a responsibility only you and a PADI Course Director
share. Our IDC Staff Course gives you at least two full days
